THIS SITE IS PROTECTED BY PAZUZU! Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the first millennium BC. He normally has a dog-like face like here, and where his body is depicted he has a scaly torso, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings. He is often regarded as an evil underworld demon, but he seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mother's womb or when newly born. Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. Amulets of Pazuzu like this were therefore placed in windows hung inside and out of dwellings, attached to bedroom furniture. Smaller versions were hung around the necks of pregnant women. Author's Note on Vernacular and Colloquialisms Used In Articles On This Site
It may be noted by some that many of my "Haunting Tales of Old New Orleans" contain comments, words, and discourse that today might be considered "politically incorrect" in the mind of the average informed reader. The inclusion of these examples of local vernacular and colloquialisms in the stories and legends presented here is a conscious effort on the part of the author to reproduce, to the greatest extent possible, the atmosphere and mindset of the time in which many of the folktales originated. It is not meant to offend or provoke, but rather to preserve the realities and daily nuances of an era in New Orleans and Louisiana - the "Creole Epoch" - that, though familiar to older generations, is fast fading from the character of New Orleans. It is my sincere hope that you read and enjoy these tales in the context and spirit in which they are intended. Thank you.

Demon du Jour Deaux
Many people experiment with ceremonial magic under the mistaken impression that the beings evoked are not part of objective reality and therefore cannot harm them. Far too many pararnormal teams walk blindly into investigations where the real power of ritual and dark magic has been practiced openly or concealed. Here's some of those "not objectively real" beings you might encounter when this is taken for granted!
Meet Today's “Demon du Jour”
OSE
Ose, sometimes Voso, is a Great President, who appears as a leophard but will take on human form at the request of the sorcerer. Ose is a cunning spirit who initiates one to the mysteries of heaven and divine things, but with the aid of other Luciferian spirits. He will also guide one to the celestial Sabbat and may transform the sorcerer into any form he or she wishes. Ose governs 30 legions of like spirits.
VINE
Vine, also sometimes called Vinea, is the 45th Spirit of Solomon, being a great king and earl. Vine appears in the form of a lion or beast-like man who rides upon a black horse, holding a serpent in one hand. In black mirror evocations, Vine has often appeared as a serpent-like lion who then abandons this form becoming a burning cloud with several eyes peering from the black fire. Vine builds towers of protection for the sorcerer on the astral plane and can destroy the walls and towers of the sorcerer's enemies. He will act as an elemental guide to those who seek to attack the sorcerer. He can also bring storms and act as a spirit of divination revealing hidden knowledge. Vine commands 36 legions of like spirits.
ANDROMALIUS
Andromalius is the 72nd Spirit of Solomon and a mighty earl. He appears in the form of a man holding a large and hissing serpent in his hand. Andomalius may reveal those who have stolen from you or identify those whom you may need to be aware of as predators against you. He will also reveal the trickery and deceit of others, and will punish those who have harmed or seek to harm you. Andomalius governs 36 legions of spirits.
VALEFOR
Valefor is a vampyric spirit-demon who appears through the black mirror as a lion with the head of an ass, and who initiates through the astral body and dreams. This spirit may be willed and bound to guard one's place of sleep and to drain the energy of an forms which draw near you as a threat. Valefor will also guide the sorcerer in the working of necromantic arts and communication with the dead. He has 10 legions of spirits at his command.
MITROKHT
This Yatukan demon is called a Liar because it teaches the manipulation of reality and what is. This ancient spirit is able, through astral vampyrism, through will, belief, and desire, to change "truth" to its benefit. This demon of the Evil Eye works with the sorcerer through a transformative process to project the Will itself through sight, causing accidents and all manner of troubles to manifest for the victim. Mitrokht is Stealth and Darkness.
SHAITAN
"And thus the Djinn of Many Names called Shaitan came forth to Adam, who was innocent and ignorant, and with the Dragon-harlot who was now Lilith, took the form of a serpent and went into the garden ..." -- Michael W. Ford It was Shaitan who originally was ordered to prostrate himself before the clay of Adam, whom the I AM considered to be perfection. Shaitan's refusal to prostrate himself was seen as pride and he was cast out of heaven. An alternate view of Shaitan could be that, as the First Angel, and being composed of Divine Flame rather than of Light as the other angels, he awakened and became aware of this special aspect that made him different from the others. His flame of fire made him greater than the clay of man, even if it was animated by God. As the first angel to preach to all others from under the Throne of God, he understood teh limitless Light of which he was a part, but awakened and restless, seeking more than what he was allowed, he responded to the power of the flame within him.
CROCELL
Crocell, also known as Crokel, is the 49th Spirit of Solomon. He appears in the form of an angel, shrouded and pale like the dead. He is a mighty Duke with a very strong presence who speaks in mystical tongues and poems of self-illumination and hidden things. He brings the sounds of rushing waters, creating a sense of calm. It is said Crocell warms and can discover baths and hidden waters which he purifies so that the sorcerer may cleanse himself in them. He was of the Order of Potentates and Powers before his fall of independence along with Lucifer and the other angelic spirits. He governs 48 legions of spirits.
ARASHK
Of the 31 Devs of the Yatukan tradition, Arashk provides the sorcerer with the power of the Evil Eye – most specifically to use it to manifest the Will in his or her environment. He helps develop the will of the sorcerer, and when used in combination with the power of certain other demons, can imbue the sorcerer with a stare that can pierce the mind and even cause death, depending on the will of the magus.
MEPHISTOPHELES
According to medieval Christian tradition, Mephistopheles is one of the demons of hell most adept at tempting humankind. Some say he was once human and fell into wickedness, thus becoming a demon. A shape-shifter and a granter of wishes, Mephistopheles can also imbue the sorcerer with hidden knowledge and glimpses of the afterlife and the dead through necromantic rites. Of all the demons known to the Western Magical Tradition none has fascinated more than Mephistopheles; celebrated in lore, literature, and music, and forever linked to the cautionary tale of the over-reaching Dr. Faustus, a folklore has developed around Mephistopheles that presents him as interchangeable with the Christian Devil. This has done nothing to diminish his appeal and the belief in his existence may have, in fact, strengthened his objective reality. Regardless of how he attained it, Mephistopheles holds pre-eminent status among those who wish to deal with the realm of the Unseen.
UVALL
Uvall, or sometimes Voval, is the 46th Spirit of Solomon. A ranking Duke, Uvall appears in the form of a huge dromedary camel, but will take on shape – a hooded man dressed in Middle Eastern garb – at the command of the sorcerer. He speaks in a dead Egyptian dialect the understanding of which he imparts to the sorcerer on an intuitive level, since through hearing alone it is indecipherable. Uvall can obtain the love of women and assist in divination. He is of the Order of Powers and brings 37 legions of like spirits.
ZARMAN
Zarman aids the sorcerer against his enemies and this is his sole purpose. He can cause premature aging in the enemy, bring on mental collapse by tormenting the victim with his or her own worst memories, and can cause a cancer-like degeneration of the body that is untreatable by any means known to modern medicine. The summoning of Zarman can be a physical strain for the sorcerer and in the event the sorcerer’s magic is not sound, causing rebound or a “slingshot” effect, working with Zarman can bring about the destruction of the practitioner himself. Unless there is good and valid reason to summon him, Zarman is one of those spirits that should be left severely alone!
ASTWIHAD
Astwihad, or sometimes Astovidhotu meaning “Divider of Bones,” is also called Silent Death, a force hungering for human life. He “prowls on padded feet” and his approach goes unheard; when he finds his victim he sucks the life force through the eyes and casts a noose about the victim’s spirit body, dragging it into the Abyss. In Yatukan tradition, the ruthless Astwihad comes with the desert winds to prey on the energy of humans; he is another entity against whom Pazuzu stands guard. The sorcerer who is able to summon and command Astwihad and not perish in the process will be able to go forth in wraith form with the spirit and prey upon the life force as a vampire among the living. But be advised: As with Zarman, magical dealings with Astwihad that go awry can cost the sorcerer dearly, even unto death.
SEERE
Seere is the 70th Spirit of Solomon, a mighty and powerful prince who serves the King of the East. He appears in the form of a beautiful angelic man, riding upon a winged horse. He makes manifest the will of the sorcerer, he initiates the seeker in the higher spheres of air and light, and can carry the sorcerer over the earth in the blink of an eye. A good-natured spirit, Seere governs 26 legions of like kind.
ELIGOS
A Duke who appears as s knight in armor carrying a lance about which is wound a serpent, Eligos reveals hidden secrets, outer as well as inner, and can assist with divination. Eligos is far-sighted and can be compelled to predict the outcome of wars and battles, or the rise of unrest. He will sometimes help the seeker obtain love. At his command are 60 legions of spirits.
SAMAEL
Samael was the greatest prince in heaven. Other celestial beings and the angels had six wings, but Samael had twelve. He was the first to rebel against the I AM. Mate of Lilith in her Maiden form, Lilith Mehetabel (Mahu Tabal) and the father of Cain through Eve while she was possessed of the spirit of Lilith. Samael fell from heaven as a great, dark star, enthroned with the crown of the highest of the Aethyr, and his dark flame illuminated all the hidden places of the earth. Later ages would name him Lucifer. When Samael fell he perceived in his new dwelling place the power of the union of flesh, spirit, and the inner burning of the isolate fire of self, the fire of independence. Infernal Prince of the East, Samael’s name comes from the root SMl which translates “Idol.” {NOTE: The facts and legends surrounding this most powerful of the Fallen Angels is voluminous and as such cannot be treated here in anything but a bare overview. For more information on this powerful Arch Demon, independent study is advised.]
SAMIGINA
Samigina, or sometimes Gamigon, is a spirit of external necromancy. He assists in communication with the souls of the dead, specifically in dreaming states. Samigina will appear in the scrying mirror as having multiple, ever-changing faces – perhaps his connection with the dead. Samigina aids the magician in invocations or evocations in the cemetery and also – mostly unknown to them – is the spirit assisting paranormal investigative teams in obtaining the graveyard EVP evidence they so eagerly seek.
AZI DAHAKA
Persian legend says that Dahaka was originally a man, a powerful king, who made a pact with Ahriman (Shaitan) who kissed Dahaka on each shoulder and caused snakes to immediately sprout from his shoulders as emblem of the pact. A father of sorcery and one of the first identifiable Anti-Christs of ancient lore, Dahaka so persecuted the people of Noah’s time that he was transformed by the Daeva into the demonic form of a three-headed snake and given the name Ahzi (Azi) which means “snake.” Azi Dahaka will assist but never serve the sorcerer, and is valuable in use against the enemies of the sorcerer whom he plagues in dream states in his serpent form. A storm fiend, a wild storm demon, Azi Dahaka is not to be summoned unless the sorcerer has the power of will and ability to control the fiend once evoked. Otherwise, interaction with Azi Dahaka is certain ruin.
PURSON
Purson is a Great King who appears in the black mirror as a man with a lion’s face carrying a viper and riding upon a great bear. Puson is a spirit of divination who can assist in communication with the unseen and the shades of the dead. He may help find treasures, reconcile enemies, and, with the assistance of the magician, is able to assume human form to interact with other sorcerers or against enemies of the magician controlling him. An angelic ruler who is usually accompanied by agents of good, Purson commands 22 legions of spirits comprised from the Orders of Thrones and Virtues.
BOTIS
Botis appears in the black mirror as a viper and then, with the command of the magician, will take on a human form having sharpened teeth, horns, and bearing a flaming sword. Botis aids in divination and the understanding of unknown languages. He can aid in reconciliation of enemies and rules over 60 legions of spirits.
ANDAR
Andar is a formidable shadow demon who guides the magician to self-deification through growing the black flame of isolation within the practitioner. Andar appears as a black, hooded, wraithlike figure and speaks in a hoarse whisper in an unknown tongue, possibly ancient Arabic or Persian. Andar is invoked through contact with inward darkness and by allowing the spirit’s impulses to become those of the magician. No one who has seen was lies hidden under the black robes of Andar has ever lived to tell of it.
KUNDAK
Kundak is the horse-demon, the steed upon which the magician rides to the Sabbat. Kundak evokes the form through the shadow dream of the magician. According to occult lore, the saddle of Kundak is fitted differently for female witches, having a phallic device in place for the arousal of the female en route to the Sabbat. Kindak can also take on the shape of a powerful wizard, indicating shape-shifting abilities. In this form he teaches primal chants and knowledge of ancient initiations.
LEVIATHAN, “DRAGON OF THE WATERY ABYSS”
"Destruction of Leviathan". 1865 engraving by Gustave Doré.
And not see the first days of the dawn.” – Book of Job
In the Enoch parables, Leviathan is the primitive female sea-dragon and monster of evil; in Rabbinic writings, she is identified with Rahab, Fallen Angel of the Primordial Deeps, and is called the Twin of Behemoth.
Leviathan and Behemoth are said to have been created by the Hebrew God on the fifth day and in ancient lore, the final end for all but the purified souls is to be swallowed by Leviathan.
Called “Lothan” by the Canaanites, Leviathan – in Hebrew LVThN – is the supernatural monster associated with the underworld. She (sometimes he) is described as a giant, seven-headed serpent that inhabits the ocean’s depths; in Qaballistic lore, Leviathan lies coiled about the roots of the Tree of Life intruding with her seven heads into the Sephira, the spheres containing the emanations of God.
In the Book of Job, Leviathan is described as a horrific beast that no human can conquer:
“Can you draw out Leviathan with an hook?
Can you put a hook into his nose,
Or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
Behold the hope of him is in vain!
Shall you not be cast down even at the sight of him?
When he raises up, the mighty are afraid:
He is the king over all the children of pride.”
Leviathan is also mentioned in the Book of Revelation. At the end of the world, Leviathan is the monster that rises from the sea to devour humankind:
“And I stood upon the sand of the sea,
And saw a beast rise up out of the sea,
Having seven heads and ten horns,
And upon his horns ten crowns,
And upon his head the name
BLASPHEMY.”
Aquatic monsters similar to Leviathan figure prominently in numerous mythological systems around the world. Australian myth includes the “Bunyip,” a ferocious water beast who dwells in the silt of lake bottoms, reaching up to drag down mortals who come too close. In Chile, the aboriginal peoples fear “Camahueto,” a sea monster known for attacking ships and dragging sailors to their deaths. The “Kanaloa” of Hawaii is described as a giant squid god ruling over the underworld of Hawaiian legends; the “Kraken” of ancient Greek myth was the bane of seafarers across the Mediterranean; the Loch Ness monster and similar beast are also well known.
Occultists know Leviathan as the Crooked Serpent, the Coiling Dragon of the Abyss, God of the Jagged Spine who plumbs the depths of the Soul. Order and Chaos at one and the same time, Leviathan is a source of phenomenal power within the occult practitioner and, once tapped, something to be feared by those whom the practitioner might target.
Unlike Pazuzu, the force and energy of Leviathan is not so straightforward or clear-cut. As the sea rises and falls, roils and rolls according to the mood of the moon and the weight of gravity, so the Leviathanic energy ebbs and flows according to the power of the one calling it forth.
“Leviathan, the great Dragon of the Watery Abyss, roars forth as the surging sea, and these invocations are his tribunals.” – LaVey
Although often identified as a masculine force in Hebrew and early-Christian texts, occultists more frequently evoke and direct Leviathan as a feminine force similar to Tiamat, the great she-dragon of Sumerian and Persian magical tradition. In this way, Leviathan is manifested as the Beast of the Subconscious, a “violent angel” of primordial darkness uncoiling in accordance with the will of the sorcerer. Like the overwhelming force of water unleashed, the power of Leviathan floods and consumes all in its path.
Some traditions compare Leviathan to Apep, the Elder Serpent of Set, and imbue the beast with those powers commonly associated with the powerful serpent gods. Set’s serpent, like Tiamat, it coiled about the heart of creation in the depths of the Abyss and responds only to his command. In this description, too, we find similarities to pre-Magian beliefs that paired Azhdeha, the Akko-Dragon, with Ahriman, the God Angri-Mainyu; just as Ahriman became synonymous with the devil of the pre-Babylonian Hebrews, so also was Azhdeha elevated and ultimately both became identified as ranking among the most powerful princes of Hell.
To the practitioner, Leviathan rules the Will, the essence of Self, the lowest-consciousness burning with a steady, black flame. Leviathan becomes the circle of working and even the Eliphas Levi the great Mage stressed the power of Leviathan by causing it to encircle Samael and Lilith in the Sigil of the Great Work, which he designed.
Leviathan responds to the sorcerer in the deepest, most secret depths of the soul and has a natural predilection to manifest the desires of the sorcerer. Once manifest, however, Leviathan cannot be denied; she must be faced and her power directed in a proper current, otherwise the result is all-consuming Chaos. The focused power of Leviathan, stemming from a limitless cosmic wellspring, cannot be banished, nor is it easily countered or resisted. If the Leviathanic current is one of retribution and vengeance, there is no escape, and because the sorcerer cannot absorb it again into his being, the target has no alternative but to abide it, and hope to survive.
“From the West, Leviathan,
Crooked Serpent of the Oceans of Immortal Existence,
I call Thee forth to witness this rite.
Open Thy eye to me and arise from the Depths!
I walk the path of the Daemon,
I walk the earth in search of Wisdom,
In spirit I walk the ghost roads to become as Thee!
